Earn while you learn, and build your career in child development!
The Apprenticeship Program pairs apprentices with experienced professionals in the child development field. Through mentorship, hands-on training, and classroom learning, you’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills to grow your career.
This one-year program includes:
- 150 hours of Related Technical Instruction (classroom learning)
- 2,000 hours of on-the-job training
All hours may be applied toward earning your Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.
Upon completion, participants receive the Early Childhood Professional Apprenticeship Certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Eligibility Requirements
- At least 16 years old
- High school diploma, GED, high school equivalency, or currently enrolled in a CTE program
- Able to perform essential apprenticeship functions safely (with or without accommodation)
- Employed in a licensed childcare program in Bay, Isabella, Gratiot, Midland, or Saginaw County
- Completion of required onboarding, health, and safety trainings
Participation Expectations
- Partner with a mentor teacher chosen by your childcare employer
- Track on-the-job and classroom hours for credentialing
- Complete readings and training assignments
- Attend at least 2 hours of apprenticeship classes each week (scheduled during off-hours)
- Participate in regular check-ins with your mentor, Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works!, and your employer
