Job Title: Winter Youth Health & Wellness Intern

Reports to: Assistant Director – Sports & Wellness

Seasonal Position: January 2021 – May 2021

Pay range: Work Experience (unpaid) (plus free YMCA Adult membership during tenure)

Status: Part-Time (10-15 hours per week)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Youth Health & Wellness Intern supports the work of the Health & Wellness Department, its Coordinator, and the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA in strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. This position provides support and guidance to youth and teens by implementing age appropriate programming and activities while acting as a positive role model to participants, parents, and community partners at the YMCA.

JOB DETAILS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Build relationships with all members, staff, volunteers, and guests by learning and using their names and initiating conversations whenever possible
  • Be knowledgeable about YMCA programs including familiarity with current program guide information, upcoming events, and other special activities and keep internal communication up to date
  • Strive to understand youth’s goals and interests to enrich their YMCA experience by facilitating new healthy living, wellness, and sports programs/activities
  • Promote a “whole-body” approach to educating youth on healthy living & wellness
  • Provide a motivating and friendly environment; foster relationships (youth-to-youth, youth-to-staff, staff-to-youth)
  • Actively encourage and engage youth participation/interaction in activities
  • Reinforce proper etiquette and usage of YMCA equipment while adhering to facility policies and procedures
  • Offer positive interaction with youth in effective, meaningful, and compelling ways; communicating using positive language and redirecting conversations that are not in line with the Y’s core values

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and basic computer skills
  • Must have previous experience, ability, and strong desire to work with youth ages 10-15 years old
  • Preference given to students with course work and/or prior experience in Elementary or Secondary Education, Child Development, Health Science, Sports, Coaching, or Exercise Science
  • Previous experience as a camp counselor or youth sports coach strongly preferred
  • Work schedule hours flexible between Monday-Friday from 3pm-8pm
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certified preferred
