Job Title:  After School Program Staff – Middle School

Reports to: Assistant Director – School Age Programs & Youth & Family Director

Work Schedule: Tues.-Thurs. (2:30pm-5:30pm) at Handy Middle School or Tues.-Thurs. (2:00-5:00pm) at Christa McAuliffe Middle School

Compensation: $10.50/hour and FREE YMCA Household Membership

Status: Part-Time/Flexible (with opportunity to pick up additional hours at other YMCA After School Sites)


The After School Program Staff support the work of the Y in strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. This position provides supervision, engagement, development and guidance for youth and teens in the YMCA’s After School program, at local middle schools, in order to provide a safe environment for students to have fun, learn, grow, and interact positively.


  • Facilitate an environment that invites exploration, promotes positive interactions, and welcomes youth
  • Set up program supplies upon arrival and clean up room before departure
  • Plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities
  • Provide assistance with homework, encourage academic progress, and career exploration
  • Build/maintain positive relationships with students and families served, school staff, volunteers, and partner organizations in the community
  • Familiarize parents and participants with Program policies and procedures
  • Provide proactive behavior interventions with students by using appropriate methods as defined by YMCA policies and procedures. If inappropriate behavior persists, inform the Site Coordinator and Assistant Director – School Age Programs or Youth & Family Director
  • Use common sense and good judgement in all situations to keep program participants safe
  • Respond to, document, and report any accidents or incidents to the Site Coordinator and Assistant Director – School Age Programs or Youth & Family Director immediately
  • Attend and participate in meetings and trainings with other staff and administration
  • Ensure the engagement of youths in assigned group
  • Provide careful, attentive supervision, and remain alert at all times
  • Serve as a positive role model and demonstrate professional behavior


  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability and desire to work with middle school students ages 11-15
  • Previous experience working with youth/teens and planning activities preferred
  • Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Experience in creating interactive and educational activities, youth development, academic enrichment and arts
  • Must possess oral, auditory and written communication skills appropriate for interacting with both youth and adults
  • Must be capable of implementing the daily administrative, program related, and supervisory responsibilities of an after school site
  • Flexibility, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances
  • Be familiar with procedures for recognizing and reporting suspected child abuse
  • Ability to foresee problems and redirect situations before an incident occurs
  • CPR certified and have basic first aid knowledge required or complete within 90 days of employment
  • Previous experience with diverse populations and ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills and basic computer skills
  • Completion of Background check, Fingerprinting and TB Test required
