Dennis Wirgowski Free Football Camp for Kids
August 19th, 12-4PM
In partnership with Beth Wirgowski and Dennis Wirgowski’s many friends, the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA was honored to be a part of the 3rd annual Dennis Wirgowski Memorial Football Camp for Kids. This football camp will took place on Sunday, August 19 at Bay City Central High School’s Engel Stadium and was completely free of charge for kids in third through sixth grades. The Dennis Wirgowski Memorial Football Camp for Kids was a one-day event geared towards teaching young football players skills to be used on and off the football field, with a focus on the mental well-being of today’s young athletes and staying safe on the field.
Guest Speaker: Evan Pilgrim
Joining us for the 3rd Dennis Wirgowski Football Camp will be 6 year NFL veteran player Evan Pilgrim. The Antioch, California native who was an All-State Football player actually played 3 Varsity sports while in High School. He then took his talents to BYU (Brigham Young University). While at BYU, the 6’4″ offensive lineman set all kinds of NCAA records for a couple of years culminating in Kodak All-American honors during his senior season. Pilgrim also set the BYU record for bench press at 510 pounds. Evan played in the Senior Bowl before being drafted in the 3rd round of the 1995 NFL draft (87th pick overall) by the Chicago Bears. He played with four different teams over the course of his NFL career: Bears, Oilers, Broncos and Falcons. Evan Pilgrim will address campers during the afternoon break on how to succeed in playing football the correct way. Pilgrim will touch on his own football career, along with the camp theme of “Playing Safe and Playing Smart.”
About the Dennis Wirgowski Memorial Free Football Camp for Kids
Dennis Wirgowski had deep roots in Bay City and spent his entire life in the Bay City area. Dennis was an outstanding athlete in many sports but excelled at the sport that he loved the most—Football. Dennis was named a Parade Magazine High School All-American football player in 1965 and was selected to be the captain of this prestigious group.
Dennis led his Bay City Central high school team to a Class A State Championship in 1965 with a 9-0 record. As a result, he received scholarship offers from several of the top universities in the country to play football before deciding to take his talents to Purdue University. He went on to play 3 seasons on a Purdue squad that would finish 8-2 for each of his three seasons. Dennis was drafted in the 9th round of the 1970 NFL draft and went on to have a 5 year career in the NFL. He then would return back to his native Bay City where he would live until his passing in early 2014.
The Dennis Wirgowski Memorial Football Camp for Kids was created for Beth Wirgowski to give back to the community that Dennis loved in his name. The Dennis Wirgowski Memorial Football Camp for Kids aims to teach young football players valuable skills to be used on and off the football field, with a focus on the mental well-being of today’s young athletes.
