DOW BAY AREA FAMILY YMCA JOB DESCRIPTION 

Job Title: Lead Teacher – Early Learners Room (Ages 18 months-2½) 

Primary Work Location: YMCA Childcare Center @ First Presbyterian Church, 805 Center Ave, Bay City

*May also be needed to occasionally work at Dow Bay Area Family YMCA Childcare Center location at 225 Washington Ave, Bay City 48708* 

Reports to: Director of Early Childhood 

Status: Full-time /Hourly (40 hours per week)/Eligible for full time employee benefits package/FREE YMCA Household Membership 

Compensation: Starting at $14.70 per hour 

POSITION SUMMARY: 

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Lead Teacher is responsible for a developmentally appropriate curriculum to meet the learning needs of toddler age children, active parental involvement and parent education opportunities, and an effective process for child/program assessment and evaluation. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Treat all children with love, respect, and dignity 
  • Plan daily activities to impact the unique needs of children’s social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development 
  • Implement activities which are designed to teach children concepts and skills through play and active manipulation of objects using the Standards of Quality and Curriculum Guidelines, National YMCA Program Guidelines, and licensing criteria for early preschool age programs 
  • Provide communication and opportunities for parents to be actively involved in all phases of the program 
  • Provide accurate documentation of children’s personal files, attendance, emergency information, and other reporting criteria necessary for proper programming or licensing guidelines 
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies throughout the year, notifying director of needs, and replacement of damaged or worn equipment 
  • Practice emergency procedures 4 times per year to ensure safety of all children 
  • Attend a minimum of 16-24 clock hours of staff development conferences, workshops, or seminars on early childhood education annually and participate in monthly staff meetings 
  • Lead, coach and mentor staff in the classroom, model behaviors and provide feedback 
  • Know and follow appropriate mandated reporting procedures 
  • Participate in yearly self-assessment, evaluation, and goal setting 
  • Maintain professional attitudes and practices when dealing with children, parents, community members and other staff, serving as a representative and role model for the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Must possess a warm and friendly personality, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, and able to relate well to children 
  • Background in Early Childhood Education and Infant/Toddler Child Development Associate Credential with a minimum of 480 hours of experience required; Associate degree or higher in Early Childhood Education or Child Development preferred 
  • Minimum age requirement of 19, per licensing guidelines 
  • Comprehensive fingerprinting and TB Test required per State Licensing 
  • Must be Certified in First Aid and Pediatric, Child, and Adult CPR (or able to obtain within 90 days of hire) 
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community 
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills; general computer knowledge  
  • Must be an energetic, motivated, team player committed to a high-quality program 
  • Must be able to lead and work closely with other caregivers in accordance with program goals and objectives

Financial AsSistance Programs

Individuals will not be turned away from participating in programs, activities, and/or membership due to their inability to pay. The Y maintains a generous financial assistance program for youth, adults, and families who demonstrate financial need. Funding for this program is provided by fundraising events at the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA and community-wide donors.
