Job Title: Winter Youth Programs Intern

Reports to: Director-Youth & Family Programs

Seasonal Position: January 2024 – May 2024

Hours: 15-20 hours per week, some weekend hours may be required

Compensation: Work Experience (unpaid), Free Y Membership during internship

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Y is seeking a fun, creative, enthusiastic and outgoing individual to provide support to the Youth Programs at the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA. This intern will be responsible for creating a safe and welcoming environment for children, while supporting and guiding them through implementation of age appropriate programming and activities. The intern will also be involved in the food program to help individuals with food insecurity live a healthy and confident life.

JOB DETAILS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with children and families served, staff, volunteers, and partner organizations in the community
  • Strive to understand youth’s goals and interests to enrich their YMCA experience by facilitating new healthy living, wellness, and sports programs/activities
  • Support the Assistant Director in ensuring smooth operation and growth of the YMCA’s youth programs
  • Be knowledgeable about YMCA programs including familiarity with program guides, upcoming events, and other special activities and keep internal communication up to date
  • Assist with assessing needs for new potential food sites and program partner organizations
  • Offer positive interaction with youth in effective, meaningful, and compelling ways; actively encourage youth participation and communicate using positive language
  • Enforce YMCA’s policies and procedures; familiarize parents and youth as necessary
  • Other duties as they arise

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have previous experience and strong desire to work with youth
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certified preferred
  • Highly organized person with superb planning skills
  • Self-motivated and energetic with the ability to take initiative
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member
  • Background in social work, public administration, education, health science or a related field is preferred

Financial AsSistance Programs

Individuals will not be turned away from participating in programs, activities, and/or membership due to their inability to pay. The Y maintains a generous financial assistance program for youth, adults, and families who demonstrate financial need. Funding for this program is provided by fundraising events at the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA and community-wide donors.
