SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Facilities Director, the employee is responsible for the overall cleanliness and general appearance of the Dow Bay Area Family Y. Also responsible to provide assistance on general maintenance projects and emergency repairs as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in custodial duties.
- Some knowledge of chemicals, plumbing, and electrical systems.
- Ability to work independently and on a variety of tasks.
- Ability to work well with the public.
- Reliability and responsibility.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF JOB
- Standing/walking for extended periods of time.
- Climbing ladders, roofs, and moving heavy objects (equipment, supplies, gym floor cover, etc).
JOB DETAILS
- Open and/or close the building (Duties dependent on shift. Shifts may vary.).
- Clean locker rooms, bathrooms, showers, etc.
- Clean, sweep, mop, vacuum and shampoo floors/carpets.
- Assist in set-up and clean-up for all special events.
- Help maintain and clean fitness equipment.
- Daily inspection of program areas for breakdowns and problems.
- Landscaping of YMCA exterior
- Respond to all feedback and complaints in a courteous and thorough fashion.
- Provide assistance on special projects as requested.
- Attend all maintenance staff meetings.
- Assist in covering/uncovering gym.
- Respond to member and staff concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Keep offices clean and free of clutter/trash.
- Keep parking lots free of litter at all times.
- Immediately report safety concerns.
- Support the YMCA Mission and four core values: responsibility, caring, honesty, and respect.

Volunteer Opportunity:
Girls on the Run – Head Coach
SUMMARY
The Head Coach is a volunteer position that works with a team of coaches to facilitate the Girls on the Run curriculum to program participants. This position entails approximately 4-6 hours per week for 10 weeks with additional time required for a coach training session and on a Saturday or Sunday for our community race event. Open to woman age 21 years or older.
CORE DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attending a 3 hour coach training session prior to the season
- Understanding and believing in the mission of the organization and acting as a spokesperson for the program.
- Serving as a role model and mentor
- Preparing, organizing, and supervising the weekly lessons
- Leading the program participants through each lesson
- Interacting with parents of program participants; planning and coordinating the end of season celebration
- Coordinating the community project
- Attending the end of season community 5K event with program participants and other volunteers
QUALIFICATIONS
- A strong desire to work in the field of girl development
- Experience working with youth
- Excellent communication skills
- The ability to be flexible and to improvise when needed
- To inspire and motivate others to believe in the Girls on the Run mission
- High organizational skills
- The ability to recognize conflict and have the skills to help resolve it
- The capacity to work in a partnership with a co-coach and/or assistant coaches
- Attend a coach’s training
- First Aid/CPR certification (a low-cost training will be offered)

Girls on the Run – Assistant Coach
SUMMARY
The Assistant Coach is a volunteer position that assists the Head Coach(s) at a Girls on the Run program site. The position entails approximately 1.5-3 hours per week for 10 weeks. Assistant Coaches can choose to attend both program sessions per week OR commit to only one day a week. We ask each Assistant Coach to determine which schedule works best for them and to maintain that schedule throughout the program for consistency on behalf of the girls. While the Assistant Coach is not primarily responsible for facilitating the Girls on the Run curriculum, they are there to support the Head Coach and program participants. Open to woman and men age 18 years or older.
This volunteer position may be used as a college internship, service learning project or other college credit project upon agreement of the school and Girls on the Run Saginaw Bay.

Childcare Education Internship
Internship Overview
The Dow Bay Area Family Y is a 96,000 square foot, non-profit, state-of-the-art fitness facility located in downtown Bay City, MI. The Y features amenities such as an aquatics area, health and wellness fitness floor, basketball and paddleball courts, childcare and preschool center, as well as programming for every member of the community. The Y is seeking a fun, creative, enthusiastic and outgoing individual to assist in the childcare department at the Dow Bay Area Family Y. The internship is an opportunity to gain experience working as an integral member of the childcare department. The childcare Intern will work closely with the Childcare Director and interact with all staff members.
Duties include, but are not limited to
- Opportunity to work with ages birth -12 years.
- Providing care and education for all the ages.

- Design and implement quarterly fitness challenges for members ( i.e. Holiday Cross Challenge, March Madness)
- Giving Y gym orientations
- Working with health seekers as well as competitive athletes
- Administering basic fitness assessments
- Opportunities are available to work with youth, adults, and seniors.
- Evaluate the quality of exercise programs and group fitness classes through the use of an evaluation form
- Personal training (depending on experience and certifications)
- Instruct group exercise classes (depending on experience and certifications)
- Help Organize and plan annual Health and Wellness Fair (spring/summer intern only)
- Record group exercise participation data
- Assist in the development and implementation of community wellness events
